Campaign against alcohol sales to minors

 Wednesday 19th December 2018

INFORMATIVE NOTE FROM THE LOCAL POLICE OF CALVIÀ

POLICE TUTORS DISTRIBUTE POSTERS AGAINST THE SALE OF ALCOHOL TO MINORS

Local Police officers of Calvià have initiated this morning, in a coordinated manner with the 'Per a un Oci de Qualitat' Platform in the Balearic Islands (padib.caib.es), a preventive campaign on alcohol consumption amongst minors and the circumstances that make it possible. The initiative is aimed at alcohol-distributor establishments, such as bars, shops and supermarkets.

Tutor police officers are reminding that the sale of alcohol to minors is prohibited with a poster from the Health Department that encourages establishments to comply with the current legislation and to assume the commitment to protect the minors health. The posters have been distributed near the three Obligaotry Secondary Education Schools of the municipality: IES Calvià (Santa Ponça), IES Bendinat and IES Son Ferrer.

A total of 30 posters have been distributed this morning in the municipality of Calvià. This action has been carried out simultaneously near all the centres adhered to the campaign with the slogans: “La vida és un joc d'equilibri i necessites una bona base” (Life is a balancing game and you need a good base) “Aquí no venem alcohol a menors” (We do not sell alcohol to minors here), and “Ens preocupam per la teva salut” (We take care of your health).

In addition, police officers have distributed an informative note that recalls that the current legislation regarding the prohibition on selling alcohol to minors, in which it is recalled that the non-compliance with the law is a serious infraction that can amount to fines of 1,000 to € 10,000 or the suspension of the activity for up to six months. In this sense, from the local police of Calvià, four establishments of the municipality have been fined for selling alcohol to minors so far this year.

It should be borne in mind that, in the Balearic Islands, the age of onset of alcohol consumption is at 16.8 years in the recreational night setting -especially during the weekend- and it is still perceived as a little dangerous drug. Young consumers are usually middle class and enjoy good social integration. In addition, half of adolescents who drink alcohol get drunk, while others take part in fights or have sex without taking precautions.

The Health Ministry's campaign and the collaboration of the tutor police officers of Calvià is because it is clear that, despite the prohibitions, alcohol is still accessible to minors and it seems that there is a need for awareness in this regard so that the protection of minors that is included in Law 7/2013, of 26th November, on the legal status of installation, access and exercise of activities in the Balearic Islands, is guaranteed.
