Calvià recovers in 2021 the Rei En Jaume Festivities with face-to-face activities and restricted audience, thus initiating the de-escalation of these festivities that commemorate each year Jaume I troops' landing in Santa Ponça.

After last year's halt, the Landing Cross institutional event will be held in person and with restricted capacity. It will be on Thursday 2nd September, with the speech of the mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, and the proclamation that this year will be delivered by the sculptor, photographer, musician and theatre actor Gaspar Servera. Servera is member of the Ou Verd organisation. From the diverse artistic facets of him, he has a wide and long relationship with the municipality of Calvià, as well as with the Rei En Jaume Festivities as an active member of one of the Colles (groups).

Although the institutional event was not held last year, they did want to acknowledge the health community and, through it, all the people, professionals and sectors of activities that have taken, and continue to take care of us all during the pandemic, proposing the proclamation, which was carried out virtually, to Dr. José Ignacio Ramírez Manent, medical director of the Calvià health area. (LINK)

In the Cross event, there will be representation of the Colles of Moors and Cristians, souls of the party, which this year will not be able to carry out the parades or the setting up of the camps either.

Cultural events

Also, this year, some of the Festivity cultural events are recovered, although only those that can be celebrated in a controlled way and with the restrictions established by the Covid regulations will be held.

The cultural events will start on 1st September with the 'Premis rei En Jaume 2021' Comic, Photography and Theatre Awards ceremony, in the Town Hall's gardens. The Awards' announcement was not interrupted last year in which, in addition, the Theatre and Comic categories were incorporated. The winning works will be exhibited, from 2nd to 30th September, in Calvià Town Hall's Exhibition Hall.

On Friday, 3rd September there will be Ball de bot with the Caliu group, and later the screening of La joia en el sí de la mar. It is an adaptation that Bartomeu Ignasi Oliver made of the Llibre dels feits de Jaume I, and the Crònica de Bernat Desclot, which was performed during the Rei En Jaume Festivities in September 2000, by a group of amateur artists from Calvià, with live music performed by the Municipal Band of Calvià and sung and commented on by three minstrels, who explained the content before each scene. In 'La joia en el sí de la mar' the landing of King Jaume I is narrated, and since 2000 it has no longer been performed, becoming a symphonic poem performed by the music Band accompanied by a narrator and a soprano. The Rock in family concert will be held the following day with La Movida Band, who will perform songs from the eighties, and with Xavi Canyelles as master of ceremonies.

The cultural events will end on Sunday 5th September with the Trobada de Gegants and the Mediterrània children's theatre performance, directed by Ricard Reguant. The giants' gathering will begin at 7 p.m., with the presence of giants from other villages in Mallorca and with the Calvian hosts Fatima, Abú Yahya, Queen Violante and King En Jaume.

All cultural events, except the Awards ceremony, will take place at Santa Ponça sports centre. Reservation is essential for all activities since the capacity will be restricted.

Sports activities

Sport will also have its leading role in the Rei En Jaume Festivities in 2021, with the XXV Malgrats Islands Canoe Racing, on 28th August.

Both, the Nordic Walking and the swimming crossing in Santa Ponça bay will take place on the following Saturday.
Prior registration is required for these sports activities.

Finally, the XXXV Rei En Jaume Regatta will be held, from 9th to 11th September, commemorating the journey made by Jaume I ships from Salou to Santa Ponça.
