Welcome to the 17 young people who visited Greece

Thursday 9th September 2021

WELCOME HOME TO THE 17 YOUNG CALVIÀ PEOPLE WHO VISITED GREECE IN THE SECOND PHASE OF THE “ERASMUS +: YOUTH IN ACTION” EXCHANGE PROGRAMME

They were in Athens from 21st to 31st August accompanied by a facilitator from the Youth Department

Calvià Town Hall's gardens have been the scenario of the welcome ceremony for the group of 17 young Calvià people who went on a trip to visit the capital of Greece and its surroundings at the end of August in the second phase of the “Erasmus +: Youth in Action ” exchange programme.

In the welcome ceremony, which took place yesterday afternoon, the deputy mayor for Citizen Participation and Youth, Marga Plomer, welcomed the Calvià youth who travelled to Athens and stated that this trip has been possible, despite having had to postpone it three times due to the pandemic, thanks to the great team that has worked, and, mainly, to the large group of young people who have shown responsibility and motivation to do so. During the event, which had testimonies from some of the young people about the trip and their experiences, some videos of the project were shown. The mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, closed the event by noting that the Town Hall will continue to support these initiatives that enrich young people in knowledge and experiences, and that strengthen us as a society.

The group of 17 young people from Calvià, accompanied by a facilitator from the Youth Department, travelled last 21st August to Athens to carry out the second part of the Erasmus + project in the Greek capital. At the end of July, in a first phase, a group of 18 young Greeks between 15 and 23 years old visited Calvià together with the group of young people from the municipality. The Calvià expedition was received in Athens by 18 young people from the EkoGreece entity who acted as hosts for the next ten days. Thanks to them, the Calvià youth were able to fully immerse themselves in the Greek culture, knowing first-hand its most emblematic places, as well as its history, traditions and gastronomy.

During the course of the trip, special places such as the Acropolis with its famous Parthenon, the temples of Zeus and Poseidon, the Plaka neighbourhood or Monasteraki square, as well as other museums, theatres and buildings were visited. They also visited areas near Athens such as the ancient capital Chalkida or the town of Nafplio with its impressive fortress. On 31st August, the group of participants undertook the trip back to Mallorca with a suitcase loaded with unforgettable memories and experiences, as well as 18 new friends in Greece.
By carrying out these activities, organised by the Youth Department, responsible leisure is promoted, thus motivating local youth to participate in international European projects and to take part in artistic and cultural activities.
