The XVIII Calvià Chess Festival - Calvià International Chess Festival will take place from 9th to 17th October at the Sala Palmanova and this time will have a hundred participants from twenty countries.

One of the novelties that will take place this year, as a complementary activity, is an exhibition of simultaneous games by Grandmasters Sabrina Vega and Mónica Calzetta on Saturday 16th October at Passeig de la Mar in Palmanova, where they will simultaneously face fifteen rivals each. The Canarian Sabrina Vega and the Mallorcan Mónica Calzetta are members of the Spanish National Team with which they have competed in several Olympics and European Championships. Both have played with the National Team in the recent World Championship held in Sitges and will return to competition in the European Championship to be held in Slovenia from 11th to 22nd November 2021.

Sabrina Vega debuted in the national team precisely at the Calvià Olympiad in 2004 and since then she has always been in the national team. She was runner-up in Europe in 2018 and is the current Spanish champion, a title that she has achieved eight times. In 2021 she was awarded the Reina Sofía Prize for sport.

Monica Calzetta, who has been the first Spanish woman in history to obtain the Grand Master title, debuted with the Spanish National Team at the 1992 Manila Olympiad and since then she has regularly represented Spain in international competitions. She was World Championship tournaments champion in Chambéry in 1995 and Saint Vincent in 1999, and European Union champion in 2010. On a national level, Mónica Calzetta has won seven times the Spanish Championship.

Also complementary activities will be held, during the days of the tournament, such as the Balearic Championship for U16 and U12 club teams, a Lightning Chess tournament, a training session by the International Master Caludio Minzer, and a simultaneous games session by the absolute Balearic runner-up - just 15 years old - Pablo Luis Aguado.

The tournament closing and awards ceremony will take place on Sunday 17th October at the Sala Palmanova. Calvià Chess Festival - Calvià International Chess Festival is an event organised by the Mallorca Isolani Chess Club and with the support of Fundación Calvià and Calvià Town Hall, and is part of the different sports activities organised to diversify the local economy offering products that extend the season.

Of the hundred people who will participate in the event, more than 50% come from other countries, and most come with families and other companions.
