Two new bird observatories at the Galatzó estate

Saturday 14th May 2022

CALVIÀ TOWN HALL PLACES TWO BIRD OBSERVATORIES AT THE GALATZÓ ESTATE, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE SEO-BIRDLIFE SPANISH ORNITHOLOGICAL SOCIETY

On the occasion of World Migrant Bird Day, the Calvià Town Hall's councillor for the Environment presented, on Sarturday14th May, the two bird observatories that have been placed in the Galatzó public estate, to facilitate the birds' observation and photography to any person fond of ornithology visiting the estate.

The Galatzó estate is a space with a high ornithological richness, in which around 80 different species of birds have been observed. Some are sedentary, which can be seen all year round, and other migrants that can only be seen during seasons, such as winter or summer. On the occasion of World Migrant Bird Day, the Calvià Town Hall presents the two observatories that have been created as a result of the agreement signed with SEO-Birdlife.

Councillor Rafel Sedano explained that the two observatories have different approaches. One has been installed next to a trough created on purpose to attract birds that come to cool off and drink, so that they can be photographed. The other, due to its location, on the other hand, has the function of being able to see and photograph, specifically, birds of prey.

In addition, the councillor for the Environment highlights that both observatories have been created from the recycling of old wooden protectors from rubbish containers that were on the estate and were removed in the process of improving the waste collection system on the estate, since January 2021.

In addition, it should be noted that SEO-virot (the SEO-Birdlife group in Mallorca) is currently working on the atlas of the Galatzó public estate's nesting birds, to advance in the conservation and knowledge of the ornithological wealth of the estate.
