XXXVI Rei En Jaume Regatta presentation

Tuesday 30th August 2022

THE REI EN JAUME REGATTA REACHES ITS XXXVI EDITION WITHIN THE OPEN SEA CIRCUIT

The competition, organised since 1986 by the Santa Ponça and Salou yacht clubs, will be held from 8th to 10th September

“The Rei en Jaume Regatta allows us to take a historical look at the arrival of Rei en Jaume, as well as being a social and sporting event. It is a source of pride that it is part of the municipality's festivities”, the mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez, assured today during the presentation ceremony.

The Rei en Jaume Regatta, a competition that reaches its thirty-sixth edition and will be held between 8th and 10th September, unites the towns of Salou and Santa Ponça, recreating the itinerary that, in 1229, led Jaime I to the island of Pantaleu first to later reach the Majorcan coast and begin the conquest of Majorca.

The nautical event organised since 1986 by the Santa Ponça and Salou yacht clubs, and with the collaboration of Port Adriano, Port Tarraco and the Calvià and Salou town halls, combines history and tradition in one of the few open-sea navigation competitions that remain in the national calendar.

"In this presentation event we want to return our thanks to the entities that have the initiative, impetus and experience to organise this sporting event", commented the mayor during the Rei en Jaume Regatta presentation.

In this sense, the president of the Santa Ponça Yacht Club, Luis Nigorra, has highlighted the "public and private collaboration that gives solidity to the Rei en Jaume regatta and consolidates its success".

The regatta's director, Manuel Nadal de Uhler, explained today at a press conference that so far "a total of 10 teams have registered, but the organisation hopes that the figure will reach 15-16 vessels since the competition is the last test and will decide the general classification of the Open Sea Circuit (Tramuntana Route, Pollença Bay and Sitges-Ciutadella Regatta) organised by the Difusion Náutica company and the Skipper magazine”.

In this XXXVI edition, the fleet will be made up of boats with ORC measurement certificates, and Classic, A2 and Solitaire boats. The classifications will be established by classes and groups, and a ranking may also be made by clubs represented by teams made up of a less-than-50 feet boat and another of more than 50.

In addition to rewarding the best of the cruise categories, Manuel Nadal recalled that the Rei en Jaume Regatta will present a special award to the boat managing to beat the cruise record, a mark held since last year by the Peregrin boat, assembled and skippered by Gloria Fluxá, with a time of 13 hours and 48 minutes.

The regattas' sports programme will start on Thursday 8th September, with the skippers' meeting and the welcome dinner for the participants at the Salou YC. On Friday 9th September, the participating boats will gather in the bay of the Catalan town, from where the departure is scheduled and the awards ceremony will take place on 10th September.

The development of the regatta can also be followed live through the Santa Ponça Yacht Club website, www.cnsp.es, thanks to the sailing-tracking system that provides GPS devices to all the participating boats so that they can broadcast a constant signal throughout the journey, thus guaranteeing greater safety during the journey.

The presentation event was also attended by Nati Francés, 1st deputy mayor and councillor for Santa Ponça ; Eva Serra, deputy mayor for Sports, and Nani Mas as representative of Port Adriano.
