Plants and Wildlife

Given the high variety of characteristics and types of resources that we have in Calvia, with sharp variations in small stretches of land, it isn't unusual to say that we count on over a thousand different species of vegetation in our municipality.

We can separate the different species of vegetation into four large groups of interest:

Inferior plants: it is worth a mention the esclata-sang, a fungus that is sought after for its taste and gastronomic value and the Polipodi, a fern which grows on shady walls and cool places.

Herbaceous plants: It should be pointed out the almost disappearance of various species, such as the Arenal Lily, the beach thistle or orchids.  A different case if that of the nettle, fennel and other wild plants.  As an exclusive plant we have the Saladina in Magaluf and the Hill Orchis in Santa Ponsa.  Calvia also has some examples of the white primrose near the peaks of Galatzó, a species that is endemic to the island.

Shrubs: the most common is the mata" or lentisco, but there are also the aromatic plants like rosemary, thyme, the white steppe, the asparagus, ivy and other which are protected such as the European fan palm, the myrtle and the savin.

Trees: the most common is the carrasco pine and on a minor level the oak, the ash, the poplar, the tree strawberry and the black poplar that belong to the forrest land.  In agriculture the most important are the algarrobo, the almond tree, the olive tree, the fig tree, elements which revalue the rural territory.

Wildlife

The type of ecosystems that are present in Calvia do not favour the presence of an abounding wildlife, so much for the amount as for its diversity. The lack of wide extentions of humid areas, the high presence of man in the natural and rural environment, the highway network with few unspoilt areas, the absence of nutrients and other resources in highground, an arid land and climate, mean that animal wildlife is not especially outstanding in Calvia.

However, in spite of this premise, there are exceptions to the rule.  For example the rocky coastline and islets in the area of Cala Figuera, Refeubetx, El Toro and Malgrats, for their special value as a nesting place and breeding ground of the various species of marine birds, which has been internationally recognised, being declared Z.E.P.A. (Zone of Special Interest for Birdlife) by the European Commission of habitats.
