Monday 28th February 2022

CALVIÀ PARTICIPATES IN A EUROPEAN PROGRAMME TO REVITALISE ALLIANCES AND PROGRESS IN THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS DEFINED IN THE 2030 AGENDA

The municipality has had the opportunity to exchange experiences and knowledge with the Portuguese town of Leiria

Calvià has participated these days in the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy European twinning programme that has taken place in Leiria, Portugal, with the aim of exchanging experiences to increase the capacities and knowledge of local managers to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Thus, a series of activities have been carried out in which the progress made in the implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation measures has been shown and the lessons learned have been shared, both the achievements and the problems that have been detected when launching actions. Regarding the conference conclusions, the importance of governance with the involvement of all actors, not only from the environmental sector but at all levels, has been highlighted; planning to ensure the actions implementation success, which in Calvià is specified in the Action Plan for Sustainable Energy and Climate (PAESC); training of all stakeholders; the creation of communication networks between the different administrations at an international level, and investment in new technologies.

The councillor for the Environment and Ecological Transition, Rafel Sedano, highlights that with the participation of Calvià Town Hall through this European programme, in which technicians from the General Directorate for Sustainability, Environment and Ecological Transition have taken part, the development of the PAESC and the efforts to mobilise all the necessary means of implementation to reinforce the World Alliance for Sustainable Development, the municipality progresses complying with the goals and indicators set by the Sustainable Development Goals SDG and the 2030 Agenda at the local level.

The Covenant of Mayors
The Covenant of Mayors is an initiative promoted by the European Commission in 2008 with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions by at least 20% in 2020. Calvià Town Hall joined in 2011, assuming a commitment to approve and implement a Sustainable Energy Action Plan (PAES) and reduce CO2 emissions by 20% and the Town Hall's emissions by 25% by 2020, taking Calvià's 2007 emissions inventory as a reference.

At the end of 2015, on the occasion of the XXI International Conference on Climate Change (COP21), the new Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy was created, which adopted the objective of reducing CO2 by more than 40% by the year 2030, in reference to the year 2005, linking mitigation and adaptation of climate change. Calvià joined this second pact in January 2019 and in November 2020 approved the new Action Plan for Climate and Sustainable Energy (PAESC) 2020-2030.

In 2021, Calvià Town Hall has been the first municipality in the Balearic Islands to sign the new Covenant of Mayors commitment.
