Calvią commemorates World Nature Day

Thursday 3rd March 2022

CALVIA COMMEMORATES WORLD NATURE DAY

Starting today, and throughout March, an exhibition of the catalogue of Singular Trees and Groves of Local Interest of the municipality of Calvià can be visited in the Casal de Es Capdellà and this Saturday the 5th the storytelling for children 'L'Alzina màgica' will take place in the same Casal, at 8.30 p.m.

In 2013, during its 68th session, the United Nations General Assembly decided to proclaim 3rd March, the day of approval of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), World Nature Day, to celebrate fauna and flora and to raise public awareness of their importance.

In its resolution, the General Assembly reaffirmed the intrinsic value of wild flora and fauna and their diverse contributions, including ecological, genetic, social, economic, scientific, educational, cultural, recreational and aesthetic contributions to the sustainable development and well-being of humanity, and recognises the important role of CITES in ensuring that international trade does not threaten the survival of species.

A year ago, Calvià Town Hall approved a new Calvià Green Heritage Ordinance, from which the regulations for good maintenance of trees in the urban centres of the municipality are established. Linked to this Ordinance, just two months ago, the new catalogue of Singular Trees and Groves of Local Interest of the municipality of Calvià also came into force. This catalogue incorporates a total of 35 units of individual specimens or groups. The previous catalogue (2008) included 10 trees, 2 tree-like shrubs and 2 groups of trees, but over time some specimens have suffered numerous disturbances that have led to their degradation or loss (a cap de fibló (Mediterranean type of tornado) caused the loss of the old Almez Lledoner of Valldurgent and one of the specimens of the Son Vich Nou Eucalyptus, and in others its trunk still remains, such as the Mata of Son Ferrer, fractured by a storm, or the Fassers of Can Trujillo, damaged by the affection by Red weevil).

In the new catalogue of Singular Trees and Groves of Local Interest of the municipality of Calvià, about 17 specimens and 6 new tree groups are added, incorporating a total of 35 units of individual specimens or groups. This supposes the inclusion of approximately a thousand specimens, amongst them trees, arborescent bushes, palm trees and dragos. In addition, a new category of protection of "specially monitored trees" is incorporated to include all those individual specimens of trees, palms or tree-like shrubs that have characteristics that make them likely to be classified as a singular tree in the future.

The councillor for the Environment and Ecological Transition, Rafel Sedano, has pointed out that the importance of this project is that both individual trees and groups are protected, "these are specimens or groups of specimens of tree growth, which deserve special protection as they present characteristics that give them a high value as natural heritage”. These characteristics are related to aspects such as, in the context of each species, their size, shape, age or exceptional scientific particularities; the rareness in number or distribution in the municipality; particularities of its development or location; or relevant botanical, cultural, historical or social interest.

The exhibition can be visited during the usual hours of the Casal, every afternoon from Tuesday to Saturday, from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
