Accessibility in Calvią playgrounds

Friday 11th March 2022

CALVIÀ TOWN HALL BEGINS TO INSTALL SIGNS IN THE PUBLIC PLAYGROUNDS TO REMOVE BARRIERS FOR CHILDREN WITH COGNITIVE DISABILITIES

Calvià Town Hall has started to install signs in public playgrounds, with maps and posters, to eliminate the barriers encountered by children with mental, intellectual and sensory disabilities when exercising their right to play, included in article 31.1 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, thus advancing towards a more accessible municipality.

The maps, with their own innovative design, provide information on the layout of the park, the recommended age of the games, and games adapted for children and adolescents with disabilities, as well as the rules for using the spaces. In addition, next to each game, a poster has been installed in which the instructions for use of each element are graphically and visually described.

This initiative responds to a demand from the citizens of Calvià, through a mother of a child with ASD who requested that children with cognitive disabilities are helped to enjoy the public playgrounds, since due to the difficulty they have in interacting with the rest of children prevented them from learning how to use the different areas. Once the proposal has been collected, the Town Hall has worked to provide a universal response using a series of universal pictograms, validated by teams of people with disabilities, which provides added value to the project since in this way it is guaranteed that it meets its objective.

The Maps Voice application is also incorporated, which transforms the graphic information on the panel into auditory information in several languages, for people who cannot read it.

This first phase has been developed in the public playgrounds of: Arquitecte Francisco Casas St., in Bendinat; Francisca Revert square, in Galatzó; Lope de Vega St., in Magaluf; Málaga St., in Son Caliu; Calle de la Noguera, in Peguera; Calle del Riu Sil (sports centre), in Santa Ponça, and Calle de la Cigonya, in Son Ferrer.
