Biodiversity awareness raising activities

Monday 28th March 2022

CALVIÀ TOWN HALL PROMOTES KNOWLEDGE ON THE MUNICIPALITY'S BIODIVERSITY

On the occasion of World Water Day, it has organised a guided tour along the Santa Ponça torrent

Calvià Town Hall, through the Department of the Environment and Ecological Transition, carries out different actions to promote knowledge on the municipality's biodiversity. Thus, on the occasion of World Water Day, a guided tour has been organised for 2nd April, from 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., to learn about the biodiversity linked to water, which will be led by Dr. Llorenç Gil and Xavier Canyelles. A tour that had to be postponed at the time due to bad weather.

This is one of the activities that the Town Hall carries out in collaboration with Fundació Universitat Empresa de les Illes Balears (FUEIB) and Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) within the framework of the agreement they signed on 8th July 2020, with the main objective of jointly carrying out different studies and projects to raise awareness on Calvià's biodiversity.

In this sense, the councillor for the Environment and Ecological Transition, Rafel Sedano, highlights that this agreement allows us, on the one hand, to study and preserve the extraordinary biodiversity that the municipality has from a scientific point of view, and, on the other, to help promote this great natural wealth to make it known and accessible to citizens.

Other activities are planned soon to get to know the butterflies in the Galatzó public estate, and a biodiversity safari on the Puig de sa Morisca.

Biodibal Platform

In addition to these, and other activities carried out with educational centres, such as outings to discover the biodiversity of the environment or dissemination on the Greek tortoise, as a result of the agreement, a space has been set up on the Biodibal platform created by the Interdisciplinary Ecology Group of the Ecology Area of the Department of Biology of the UIB and Red Eléctrica de España.

Biodibal is the largest database on biodiversity of the Balearic Islands. Through the mobile and web applications (www.biodibal.uib.cat) the information contained in the database can be easily and quickly consulted. Specifically, the number of observations of species of flora, fauna and fungi in the area of the municipality of Calvià currently included in the database and validated is 1480, of 472 different species.

In addition, you can search by date, thus obtaining a forecast of the species that can be seen on a given day or season, which allows you to schedule outings or nature trips, knowing in advance where and when to go to see certain species with a high probability. This information is complemented by that referring to the routes that can be taken in the municipality and the establishments and companies that offer services related to nature tourism and agrotourism.
