Wednesday 6th April 2022

24 YOUNG PEOPLE WHO LEFT THEIR STUDIES PREMATURELY TRAIN IN CALVIÀ THROUGH THE PQI INITIAL QUALIFICATION PROJECTS

The IFOC complements training for the first time with new lines of complementary training, professional licenses and access to official education in which 49 people have enrolled

24 young people, between 16 and 21 years old, who have not completed ESO studies, are receiving training at the Calvià Training and Employment Institute centre (IFOC) in Son Ferrer, within the framework of the Initial Qualification Projects (PQI) whose objective is to train young people who have left the educational system prematurely so that they can continue their studies or give them tools to learn a trade for their labour market insertion.

In Calvià, two specialties are offered, via professionalism certificates: a PQI on vehicle electromechanical maintenance assistant, which began in 1994, and another on hairdressing assistant, which started five years ago. With this training they obtain both, the first level of Adult Education and the Level 1 Professionalism Certificate.

In addition, for the first time, the training is complemented by the implementation of an ambitious programme that contains new lines of training aimed at young people from the municipality who participate or have participated in PQI programmes, or simply have the necessary knowledge to access the 'haircuts' module training, preparation for 'intermediate degree in hairdressing and automotive training cycles' entrance exams, preparation for Level 2 key competences, professional license of fluorinated gases handler and preparation of vehicles for the ITV (Spanish MOT). A total of 49 people have enrolled in these new training lines.

The mayor of Calvià, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, has listened to the students who are following these courses, and has encouraged them to continue training and to take advantage of this opportunity they have to be able to study and acquire work skills in what they like. The visit was also attended by the president of the IFOC and deputy mayor for Education and Training, Olga Granados; the deputy mayor for Youth and Participation and vice president of the IFOC, Marga Plomer, and the councillor for the Son Ferrer area, Alfonso Molina.

Calvià, through the IFOC, offers PQI activities that are subsidised by the Regional Ministry of Education and Training and that allow combining pre-employment training with regulated academic training measures. Thus, during a school year, students, in addition to obtaining general training, acquire job skills in a specific profession, which is complemented by final internships in a company. The complementary lines are financed by own means.
