New municipal plan for addiction prevention

Wednesday 22nd June 2022

THE NEW MUNICIPAL PLAN FOR THE PREVENTION OF ADDICTIONS INTRODUCES BEHAVIOURAL ADDICTIONS NOT LINKED TO SUBSTANCE USE, SUCH AS TRIC

The PEMPA, which will be valid from 2022 to 2025, was initially approved in May's plenary session

Calvià Town Hall already has the new Municipal Plan for the prevention of addictions (PEMPA), which was initially approved in May's plenary session and will be valid from 2022 to 2025.

The new PEMPA introduces a novelty regarding the previous plans. Thus, for the first time, it talks about addictions instead of just talking about drug dependencies, thus responding to the current needs of citizens, since it incorporates the prevention of addictions that have their origin in the use of networks and the so-called TRIC, Relationship, Information and Communication Technologies.

The development of the new PEMPA revolves around 6 aspects:

Promote the performance of preventive activities that favour attitude changes aimed at modifying behaviours of problematic drug use and abuse, as well as reinforcing behaviours that favour healthy lifestyle habits.

Promote social awareness about the risks and harm caused by drugs and addictions, increase the perception of danger associated with substance use and certain addictive behaviours such as gambling, relationship, information and communication technologies, and have citizen participation to achieve that purpose.

Reduce the presence in the social and community environment of the promotion of drug use and other behaviours likely to create addiction.

Develop personal skills and abilities that reduce vulnerability to the use of addictive substances and other behaviours that can cause addiction.

Promote healthy living habits and behaviours and the use of the Internet as healthy leisure alternatives, incompatible with substance abuse and other addictive behaviours.

Favour a comprehensive intervention in the field of addictions through coordination between the different service networks and citizen entities.

PEMPA is valid for 4 years, in line with the National Strategy on Addictions 2017-2024 of the National Drug Plan, with the same objectives of moving towards a healthier, more informed and a safer society.
