Saturday 12th February 2022

THE ENTORN DE CALVIÀ MAGAZINE DEDICATES A MONOGRAPH TO THE MOST OUTSTANDING CELEBRITIES OF THE MUNICIPALITY

The publication delves into some of the main personalities, residents or visitors, from the Middle Ages to the present

Issue 12 of the Entorn de Calvià magazine titled Personatges and edited by Calvià Town Hall was presented this morning in Peguera. The publication contains original articles written by professionals who review topics such as Medieval lives in Calvià, The Bad Countess, Bandits, thugs and 'agermanats' in the Pariatge lands, or Women, silenced and forgotten victims. In addition, it offers interviews with Lleonard Muntaner, editor and historian; Xavier Terrasa, historian and cultural activist; Tummy Bestard, former US consular agent; or Maria Ferrer, journalist.

Other topics with an informative aim are also dealt with, such as The Marquises of la Romana and their connection with Calvià; Life and legacy of Elionor Aguiló i Aguiló, the “Princess of the xuetes”; François Aragó, notes on the history of a wise man who measured the world; The work of the engineer Waring in the lands of Calvià: the construction of a dream; A countryside housewife in the 19th century; Doctors Juaneda; The mayors and mayoress of Calvià from the Second Republic to the present; Natacha Rambova's work on Cala Fornells; or Bruno Kreisky, the great promoter of the commons.

During the Entorn de Calvià presentation ceremony, the mayor, Alfonso Rodríguez Badal, paraphrasing Milan Kundera, highlighted that "culture is the memory of the people", and therefore "Calvià is the result of what so many generations have done", adding that "we have to know history with the most relevant events and celebrities, but also look at the underhistory, that of those anonymous people who have been forging, generation after generation, the history and culture of a people".

The geographer Antoni Aguareles has also intervened in the presentation event to value the figure of the artist Natacha Rambova and claim the participation of the civil servants in the Entorn de Calvià magazine, of which he is a member of the advisory board.

This was followed by a theatrical improvisation performance by Diego Ingold and Marina March, enlivened with music by the pianist Mon Joan Tiquat, who provided a touch of humour.

Entorn de Calvià was recovered in 2013. Most of the writing and content is the responsibility of civil servants, but it also has the participation of university professors, journalists, professionals and experts who provide unpublished material and data of interest to better understand the municipality of Calvià in the past, today and its future prospects. In previous editions, topics such as the architecture of the territory, gastronomy, tourism, women, sports, or music have been addressed.
